History of the resort
The history of Obzor is about 3 thousand years old. The beginning of the city was the Thracian settlement of Navlachos. In the 1st millennium BC. e. Heliopolis (“City of the Sun”) was founded in its place by Greek settlers. After the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC. e. a temple of Jupiter was built in it, and the city received the name Theopolis ("City of God") or Tempul Yovis ("Temple of Jupiter"). The remains of this temple are still preserved in the city center. After the division of the Roman Empire into Western and Eastern (Byzantine) in 395, the city was the summer residence of the Byzantine emperors. Later, the Bulgarian fortress Kozyak was built. After the conquest of Bulgaria by the Ottoman Empire, the village of Gozeken (“Review” in Turkish) arose on this territory.

After the fall of Rome, Heliopolis was conquered by the Turks and became part of the Ottoman Empire, first under the name Güzlu "beautiful", and later in the 16th century the city received the name Gezken "beautiful view". The city was under the Turkish yoke until the middle of the 19th century, when the Russian Empire conquered the Balkans, and the city became part of the Bulgarian state, receiving its final name, Obzor, in 1935.
